WORLD INTERVENTION NEEDED TO RESOLVE ISRAELI-PALESTINE CONFLICT
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 31 (Bernama) -- The International community, the United
Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the Quartet (United States, Russia, the
European Union and the United Nations) should make every effort to ensure that
aggressive military actions by Israel in Gaza do not lead to a widening of the
conflict involving other countries in the region.
Foreign Minister Dr Rais Yatim said they must exert efforts for an immediate
ceasefire and the deployment of an international force, so as to de-escalate the
conflict and stabilise the situation, and take other confidence-building
measures between the parties, with the objective of resuming the peace process.
"I have today despatched a diplomatic note to the Secretary-General of the
OIC and the United Nations (UN) to take immediate stock of these developments
and take the necessary collective action of mediation," he said in a statement
here Tuesday.
Rais said he had also extended a similar note to the United States (US)
Secretary of State Dr Condoleeza Rice to use her utmost in bringing to a stop
the Israeli onslaughts and commence immediate and comprehensive settlement with
the realisation of two states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in
peace within secure and recognised borders, based on the roadmap and the
relevant UNSC resolutions.
He said Malaysia strongly condemned the series of Israeli air strikes
against a Palestinian neighbourhood of Khan Younis in Southern Gaza on Dec 27
which left at least 367 Palestinians dead and more than 600 wounded.
"Malaysia stands firm that there is no excuse for the dispropotionate,
indiscriminate and excessive use of force in Gaza and totally rejects the
collective punishment imposed by the Occupying Power on the Palestinian people,"
he said.
Rais said the Israeli attack on Gaza completely disregarded international
law and was in violation of the UN Charter.
"Malaysia considers this act as a war crime and crime against humanity," he
said.
He also urged the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC), the UNSC and all
parties to exercise utmost restraint, in particular, to avoid additional
casualties among innocent civilians and damage to property and infrastructure,
and to refrain from acts that could further exacerbate the situation.
"Military and violent actions only serve to fuel hatred and undermine
attempts by all parties and international community to bring about
reconciliation and hope for peaceful solution to the conflict," he added.
