LOOKING FORWARD WITH CAUTION TO 2009
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 31 (Bernama) -- With reports of a gloomy economic outlook for 2009, people are looking forward with caution to the new year.
Leaders are advising a tightening of belts in the face of a global economic
downturn which the World Bank translates as less investment, slower growth and
fewer exports for developing countries in 2009.
President of a ruling Barisan Nasional component party, Malaysian Indian
Congress (MIC),S. Samy Vellu, in his New Year message, has called on Malaysians
irrespective of race and religion to "close ranks and work together" to face the
economic slowdown "which is expected to greatly affect our country in terms of
job security and investments".
He urged the government create safety nets to ensure that Malaysians would
receive minimal effect of the global economic downturn.
He said Malaysians must take it upon themselves to forge unity and make 2009
a "Year of Unity".
Human Resource Minister Dr S. Subramaniam, who is also the MIC
secretary-general, in his message, urged Malaysian workers to "buckle up" to
face the global economic slowdown.
He said training and retraining would be the focus of his ministry to assist
retrenched workers to secure alternative jobs.
In KOTA KINABALU, East Malaysia state of Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman said
the state government would strive to work harder and listen to the people on
their needs.
He said the outcome of the 2008 general election for Sabah proved that the
people in the state were supportive of the state government's development
initiatives and the state government would continue to work harder to meet their
needs. The Barisan Nasional (BN) in Sabah lost only one seat each in the state
assembly and parliament to the opposition.
Musa also called on the people in Sabah to work with the government to
increase competitiveness in a globalised world, saying that "we must remain
united in putting our strategies and plans to work as we move into the next
phase of development".
In SHAH ALAM, state of Selangor Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) Abdul Khalid
Ibrahim said the major challenge in 2009 was to find ways to reduce the adverse
impact of the global economic downturn on the state.
"It cannot be denied that the world economic downturn will have an impact on
the growth of manufacturing industries in Selangor," he said in his New Year
message.
He said the leaders and people in the state must ensure that every ringgit
was spent prudently.
"This is the time to translate the limited resources in the state into
efforts generating reasonable value for services and contracts.
"The other challenge also includes ensuring that the people do not adopt a
negative attitude during the downturn," he said, adding that the economic
challenge should be regarded as a motivation to step up productivity.
