SOME 600 STRAY DOGS KILLED TO PREVENT RABIES IN PANGKALPINANG

Pangkalpinang, Bangka Belitung Province, Jan. 1 (ANTARA) - Around 600 stray dogs have been culled by Pangkalpinang agricultural and animal husbandry officers in anticipation of a rabies outbreak in the city.
The dogs which were mostly found in garbage dumping areas and on the streets, were poisoned, Widyatmono, head of the Pangkalpinang agricultural and animal husbandry office said here on Wednesday.
Ellis Herawati, the Bangka Belitung animal husbandry, agricultural and food resilience office head, said the stray dog elimination was conducted in six districts and one city in the province.
The office has targeted to kill around 1,000 dogs in each district and city, she said.
Prior to the stray dogs elimination drive, the office had informed local residents to keep their dog pets at home, as the target of the anti-rabies program was stray dogs, she said.
Meanwhile, around 300 dogs were culled in an anticipation of rabies outbreak in Badung District and Denpasar city, Bali Island, recently.
"Besides, some 3,000 dogs have been vaccinated and put them in cages as domestic pets," Dr I Gusti Ngurah K Mahardika, lecturer of the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Udayana, said.
Speaking in a media workshop on bird flu and rabies control, he said that the operation was conducted simultaneously to prevent a rabies outbreak in Unggasan, Badung District.
He said that 90 percent of the dog population in the district were vaccinated and the remaining 10 percent were eliminated.
