Pakistan, India exchange lists of nuclear facilities

ISLAMABAD, Jan. 1 Kyodo -
Pakistan and India on Thursday exchanged the lists of nuclear facilities
covered by a bilateral agreement prohibiting attacks on such facilities.
Paksitan's Foreign Ministry said it handed over a list of the country's nuclear
facilities to an officer of the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.
At the same time, a list of the Indian nuclear facilities was delivered to a
Pakistani diplomat in New Delhi.
The agreement prohibiting attacks on nuclear installations was signed in 1988
by the late Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and the late Indian Prime
Minister Rajev Gandhi.
Under the agreement, the two countries agreed to exchange lists of their
nuclear installations, with locations, that they would like not to be attacked
in the event of a war.
Updated lists are exchanged on the first day of every year so that both
countries have the chance to add to the lists any new facilities they would
like to be protected.
Relations between the two nuclear-armed rivals have been especially tense in
the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks in late November that left more than 170
people dead.
India blames the attacks on Pakistan-based militants and is demanding Pakistan
send it several people wanted for terrorist activities in India.
Pakistan has maintained it would prosecute the people if India provides
evidence of their involvement in the Mumbai attacks.
