Laos to sell sweet corn to RoK, China

(KPL) Companies from the Repbulic of Korea (RoK) and China have expressed their interest in buying 700,000 tonnes of sweet corn from Laos, according to a Ministry of Industry and Commerce official.
According to Production and Trade Promotion Department Director General Bounmy Manivong, RoK buyers wanted to purchase 400,000 tonnes of corn and Chinese buyers, 300,000 tonnes. “Initially we will offer 200,000 to 300,000 tonnes of corn to Korean buyers, because we need to collect information on the amount of corn we have first,” he was cited by the Vientiane Times as saying. Officials will finish surveying corn stocks in northern provinces by the end of this month.
“We have almost finished collecting data, and the amount of surplus corn shouldn’t be more than 450,000 tonnes,” said Bounmy.
RoK buyers have signed a memorandum of understanding with Laos, indicating their intention to buy the crop, but no price has been set yet.
At this time last year prices stood at 1,250 kip per kg, but have now dropped to 900 kip per kg.
Currently, Laos has 450,000 tonnes of surplus corn, with Xayaboury province alone accounting for more than 300,000 tonnes. High oil prices in recent years contributed to soaring food prices and prompted many countries to invest in agricultural production to ensure food security. This has led to current crop surpluses, the ministry said.
