MODERATE EARTHQUAKE HIT INDONESIA'S WEST REGION TWICE
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 6 (Bernama) -- Two moderate earthquakes rattled
Indonesia's west Irian region early this morning, one measuring 5.4 on the
Richter scale and the other, 5.2.
The first earthquake occurred at 3.24am, about 643km northeast of Ambon and
1,767km southeast of Kunak, while the second hit at 4.32am, at a location
679km northeast of Ambon and 1,793km southeast of Kunak.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department said the earthquakes did not pose
any tsunami threat.
In another statement, the department said another earthquake measuring 5.0
on the Richter scale hit southern Sumatra at 12.54am.
The quake was epicentred at 2.5 degrees south and 101.0 degrees east and
there was no tsunami threat, the statement adds.
