MRCS MEDICAL TEAM DEPARTS FOR CAIRO THIS FRIDAY
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 7 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS)
will send a medical team to Cairo, Egypt, this Friday to support the Palestine
Red Crescent Society's (PRCS) relief and humanitarian work following the crisis
in the Gaza Strip.
The team, comprising three doctors led by Dr Yahaya Abd. Ahmad from
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) (a local university) and a relief and logistics
officer will depart from the KL International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang, Friday
night.
MRCS chairman Tunku Tan Sri Shahriman Tunku Sulaiman said the team would
be in Rafah for two weeks and the next team would be deployed if required.
"From Cairo, they will take ground transport to Rafah (Egypt-Gaza border
crossing) where they will meet and work closely with the International
Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and International
Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)," he told reporters after launching the MRCS
International Relief Fund, here, Wednesday.
Tunku Shahriman said MRCS had donated US$10,000 to the PRCS special account
in the Ramallah Al Balad branch as an immediate response to its emergency appeal
of US$6.8 million to alleviate the Palestinian people's suffering following
Israel's brutal onslaught, which had so far killed at least 660 and injured more
than 2,950 Palestinians.
As for the MRCS fund, he said it would be used initially to finance the
purchase of medicines and relief items.
He said donors could send cheques or cash to the following address:
Secretary-General, MRCS National Headquarters, 32, Jalan Nipah off Jalan Ampang,
55000, Kuala Lumpur.
Cheques should be made out to the "MRCS International Relief Fund" and
written at the back GAZA CITY, or bank the donation into MRCS Maybank account
no-5144 2210 2657. Donations to the MRCS are entitled to tax-exemption.
Dr Yahaya said this was the first time he would be involved in providing
medical assistance in a humanitarian crisis.
"I feel anxious. With the help from Dr Azmi Yusof and Dr Maznor Shari (the
other two doctors), I hope we can assist those in need in this crisis," he said.
