Cessation of slash and burn cultivation by 2010

(KPL) In the past years, Laos took proactive steps to completely stop the slash and burn cultivation and it has targeted 2010 as the year of its cessation.

This is based on a press release from the steering committee on Rural Development and Poverty Reduction which announced its report on poverty reduction and rural development from 2006-2008 and its plans for 2008-2010.

This project is related to the other policy on land-forest allocation and how best to manage such a resource.

In order to offer the people an alternative to the slash and burn method the managers of this project are mobilizing people to be involved in sustainable agriculture and animal husbandry and they are getting funds from the government for making such a switch.

The advisors from state and enterprise companies guided the participants to carry out their rural production activities, to market them and to live happy lives.

In connection with this, the state and enterprise companies have expanded their training and research course centre and the technical service centre to the local areas and it is also getting the small and medium enterprises or SMEs to assist the rural people.

The companies are also developing the infrastructure in the rural areas, such as making improvements to bridges and roads and the roads from one province to another.

Regarding electricity, the companies are expanding the electricity grid to local areas and the target is to provide this facility to 70 per cent of all the rural people by 2010.
