Fed Cup selection a turning point: Dokic
Jelena Dokic arrived for the Hobart International saying her return to Australia's
Fed Cup squad after eight years marks her improving relationship with tennis
authorities.
Dokic's Fed Cup selection teams her with Samantha Stosur, Casey Dellacqua and
doubles specialist Rennae Stubbs for next month's Asia-Oceania zone competition in
Perth.
"My relationship has been getting better and better with Tennis Australia (TA),"
Dokic told reporters in Hobart on Thursday.
"Like I said when I first arrived before the play-off, I apologise for the remarks I
made this time last year and that was my mistake.
"But I hope we can turn a corner."
Dokic, 25, clashed bitterly with TA and Australian Open tournament director Craig
Tiley for refusing her a wildcard into the 2008 Open last January.
The incident punctuated the former world No.4's troubled career, disappointing
tennis fans urging her to make a comeback.
She was welcomed back to Australia's Fed squad on Wednesday after a strong showing
against former Australian Open champion Amelie Mauresmo in Brisbane on Monday.
"I think from all the results and performances maybe I was the next (Fed Cup) choice
after the three girls," Dokic said.
"It was up to selectors to make the decision and they've made it and I'm happy.
"It's great to picked, and it's great to be a part of the team again."
Dokic continues her preparations for this year's Australian Open in Hobart after
being granted a wildcard into qualifying for the Moorilla Hobart International.
She last played for Australia in 2000 and after a series of bust-ups with Australian
officials, Dokic represented her native Serbia in 2004.
There have been previous attempts at a comeback, but this time Dokic looks both
committed and fit, having shed a substantial amount of weight since the start of
last year, when she did not even have a world ranking.
The match against Mauresmo was her first on the main tour since last May, but Dokic
has kept herself busy, winning three minor tournaments in the last year and climbing
back to No. 177 in the world rankings.
She is working with a Croatian coach, Borna Bikic, whose brother, Tin, is her
long-time boyfriend.
Qualifying rounds of the Hobart tournament begin on Friday.
