GOVT SINCERE IN HELPING PALESTINIANS - MINISTER
KUALA TERENGGANU (Malaysia), Jan 8 (Bernama) -- Umno vice president Tan Sri
Muhyiddin Yassin said the government's sincerity in helping the Palestinians
should not be questioned or politicised as a means to attract voters at the
Kuala Terengganu by-election in the east coast state of Terengganu.
"This is not a political but a humanitarian issue, something that cannot be
politicised. How shallow of the opposition to say that government efforts are
for political interest?, he said after opening the Small and Medium Industries
Development Corproation (SMIDEC) office here Thursda.
he International Trade and Industry Minister said on the contrary, it was
the opposition who politicised the Palestinian issue to fish for votes at the
by-election on Jan 17.
"We do not only sympathise but are also angry with what is happening in
Gaza. Innocent people including children are being killed. The government view
this seriously and had called for a special session of the United Nations (UN).
"This is not a national but an international issue. We cannot dismiss what
Israel had done lightly. It must not only be condemned but stopped."
Muhyiddin dismissed opposition claims the government move urging UN to
convene a special session would prove futile as it would be vetoed by the United
States.
"We are not asking for a meeting of the Security Council but a meeting of
the UN proper. We believe many countries will support our call to put a stop to
the Israeli atrocities."
He said the opposition was afraid that the move would put the BN government
on the world stage and was confident the people could evaluate what the
government was doing.
The opposition was using the same issues used in the general election like
the Internal Security Act (ISA),economy and education, issues that the people
had understood.
On the economy, Muhyiddin was confident that Malaysia's experience in riding
the global economic crisis of 1997-1998 would help the country see through the
current economic slowdown.
