WORLD LEADERS FAILED GAZA - MERCY MALAYSIA

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 10 (Bernama) -- The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and world leaders have failed Gaza and the Palestinian people, said Mercy Malaysia president Dr Jemilah Mahmood.

Dr Jemilah, who just returned from Rafah, Egypt, told a press conference
here Saturday that the Israeli aggression and the massacre was a result of a
complete political failure and it was now a question of accountability.

"We have witnessed patients coming through, children being shot in the head
by sniper fire. You can say you bomb a building and there's collateral damage
but when you target kids and you have bullet holes in their chest and their
heads, this is not collateral damage.

"I think we need to hold (world) leaders accountable, we need to hold the
Security Council accountable to this.

"And I really echo the sentiments of the United Nations that there needs to
be an independent investigation of the bombing of two schools, in the Jabaliya
refugee camp and the Asma primiray school in the Gaza city," she said.

According to Dr Jemilah, three out of 10 casualties were children and that
more than 3,000 people were wounded and almost 800 killed.

"We witnessed Egyptian ambulance queuing at the border. Unfortunately, by
the time they managed to go in and bring the injured, the majority were dead
bodies as it was too late for them to save many others," she said.

To date, Mercy Malaysia has sent between 45 and 50 tonnes of medical
supplies in five trucks.

According to a Mercy Malaysia press statement circulated to reporters at the
press conference, Petronas Saturday contributed US$300,000 to Mercy Malaysia's
Palestine Relief Fund to alleviate the sufferings of the Palestinians.

"The contribution which amounts to about RM1 million, is over and above the
yearly grant of RM1 million which Petronas provides Mercy Malaysia," it said.
