Majority supports constructing cable car at Phu Kradung

BANGKOK, March 13 (TNA) -- Majority of respondents in a poll conducted recently by Bangkok’s National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) is in favour of constructing a controversial cable car at Phu Kradung, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Thailand. NIDA Poll was conducted on 1,175 people nationwide and 214 residents of Loei showed that 51.58 per cent of the total respondents was in favour of building the cable car at Phu Kradung, one of the best known national parks in the kingdom. The poll showed that 26.81 per cent of the respondents was against the construction of cable car to the mountain and 2.04 per cent said the park should be closed to visitors in order to give time for natural environment to recover. 64.02 per cent of Loei residents was in favour while 28.5 per cent was against, according to the poll. Those who were in favour cited that the cable car would save time and provided convenient to visitors as they do not have to climb all the way and also save money for guides in carrying their bags. Those who were against the idea said that the construction of cable car would negatively impact the surrounding environment and simultaneously reduce income of the guide. As many as 80.51 per cent of the respondents in other parts of the country plus 38.79 per cent of Loei residents admitted that they have never visited Phu Kradung but would love to visit if they have an opportunity.
