Labour Ministry affirms Thailand seriously solves IUU problems

BANGKOK, March 17 (TNA) -- Thailand Ministry of Labour (MoL) has inked an agreement with international labour networks against unacceptable forms of work in the Thai fishing and seafood industry, with an aim to promote Thailand's serious stance in tackling the Illegal Fishing (IUU) problems in the country. Labour Minister Gen Sirichai Distakul said Thailand has always been seriously solving the problems of IUU but has not really been well acknowledged by the international community, as the framework of operation concerning the problem is still quite limited and most international countries do not under the problems that Thailand is facing. He said MoL has then decided to join forces with the European Union (EU) and the International Labour Organisations (ILO) to sign an agreement on am academic cooperation project to combat against unacceptable forms of work in the Thai fishing and seafood industry, so as to create basic respect in work environment. He said the move would also help prevent child and forced labours, as well as to against the unacceptable types of works in fishing and seafood industry in the country. The minister believes that the latest agreement would help lift Thailand's IUU-related problem solving operations to be on par with international standard It would also helped to encourage entrepreneurs to strictly follow basic labour rights, where both the EU and ILO have promised to promote their understanding on Thailand's hard work to solve the IUU problems to the rest of the world. The minister said all sides have predicted that a change for the better would be witnessed within a year.(TNA)
