From Adnan Jahaya

HO CHI MINH CITY, Jan 12 (Bernama) -- After securing US$1.5 billion power
plant project in Tra Vinh provice in south Vietnam, Malaysian company Janakuasa
Sdn Bhd is eyeing for a second project in Soc Trang province, about
200km from this commercial capital.

Dewan Negara (Senate) president Dr Abdul Hamid Pawanteh said Soc Trang was a
suitable location for the second project.

Earlier, the Vietnamese government awarded the "Duyen Hai 2" power plant
project to Janakuasa, a company based in the northern state of Perlis, to be
built on a 200ha coastal reclaimed land in the Tra Vinh province.

Janakuasa, an independent power producer, has the capacity to build the
1,200MW plant in the Mekong Valley, he said when met after calling on Soc Trang
region residents' commmittee vice-chairman Trung Minh Chanh.

Janakuasa President and chief executive officer Ti Chee Liang was present.

Despite facing stiff competition from other companiese eyeing for similar
opportunities, Dr Wan Abdul Hamid said the Soc Trang region administration saw
Janakuasa's capabilities and received recognition in Vietnam.

He said Soc Trang neighbouring Tra Vinh were located in the Mekong Valley
inhabited by about 18 million people.

Dr Abdul Hamid said Janakuasa can provide significant contribution to
Vietnam through the mega project, what more with the company headquartered in
Selangor state enjoying the cooperation of Vietnam's main utility company --
Electricity of Vietnam (EVN).

However, for now attention will be focused on the 1,200MW Duyen Hai 2
project to be implemented in 2011 and slated for completion by 2015.

Tenaga Technology Perlis Consortium Sdn Bhd (TTPC) plant which operates in
Sungai Baru, Perlis, bears testimony for the success of Janakuasa which is a
major shareholder in the RM1.8 billion (US$0.5 billion) facility.

Before meeting Trung, Dr Abdul Hamid, who once helmed TTPC, also called on
Tra Vinh Residents' Committee chairman Tran Hoan Kim at Tra Vinh town, about
200km from Ho Chi Minh City.

Dr Abdul Hamid, who has been in Vietnam since Jan 4, also met Vietnamese
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dzung and Trade and Industry Minister
Vu Huy Hoang in Hanoi.
