17th APPF opens in Vientiane

(KPL) The 17th annual meeting of the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary forum (APPF) was officially opened in Vientiane yesterday, which will focus on addressing various issues of worse global financial crisis, economic and trade promotion, political and security and inter-parliamentary cooperation.
The inaugural ceremony of 17th APPF was chaired by Lao National Assembly President Thongsing Thammavong who is also the President of the APPF.
“It is the first event take place in Laos and we consider it as a political important event, a symbol of solidarity, friendship and cooperation between nations in the Asia-Pacific regions,” said President Thongsing.
More than 300 delegates from 23 countries and one observer country (Brunei) and the Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union attended the meeting to discuss and share countries’ opinions a number of issues such as climate change, the situation on the Korean Peninsula, Women’s participation in politics, sustainable economic development and cluster munitions.
However, there were new issues and challenges facing the community, which also attract attention of the member countries especially the global financial crisis, food shortage, the energy and food security, and also measures to strengthen trade and investment cooperation to keep the regional competitive.
Lao National Assembly initiated about six draft resolutions touching upon cluster munitions, peace and security, gender in parliaments, energy security, food security, tourism and poverty alleviation and APPF future work.
The forum also discussed amendments of APPF rules and Procedure to ensuring its effectiveness.
The APPF was founded by former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone in January 1993 in Tokyo, Japan.
The APPF is a loosely-structured and non-exclusive forum of national parliamentarians who participate either as delegates of their parliaments or in their personal capacities.
The APPF seeks to provide opportunities for national parliamentarians of the Asia Pacific region to identify and discuss matters of common concern and interest and to highlight them in a global context.
