SET-UP OF CERTS TO BENEFIT NATION -- MINISTER

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 13 (Bernama) -- The establishment of Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) among the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC)members will benefit Malaysia in many ways, said Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Maximus Johnity Onkili.

He said other than optimising the dissemination of cyber alerts, it would
also provide a new platform for the OIC members to exchange ideas and expertise
and to promote joint development on measures to deal with large-scale cyber
security incidents.

"This OIC-CERT collaborations and cooperation initiative will also result in
economic value creation by being a platform to foster greater trust, long-term
friendship and business cooperation among OIC members," he said at the opening
of the OIC-CERT Seminar 2009, themed "Strategic Partnership against Cyper
Threats" here Tuesday.

The text of his speech was read by Ministry of Science, Technology and
Innovation's secretary-general, Abdul Hanan Alang Endut.

The three-day seminar, organised by CyberSecurity Malaysia, an agency under
the ministry, attracted over 100 participants.

Meanwhile, CyberSecurity chief executive officer, Lt-Col Husin Jazri, said
the seminar would offer programmes such as the establishment of CERTs, regional
cooperation and educating the importance of information security.

"These programmes are structured to enhance business dynamism and networking
among players both in the public and private sectors with the intention of
promoting OIC-CERT as a global hub for information security in the long run," he
said.
