GSM system-Laos, Cambodia to link mid-2009

(KPL) The Enterprise of Telecommunications Lao (ETL) and Telecommunication Company (TC) of Cambodia signed a memorandum of understanding on connecting optical fiber cable, on 12 January, Champassak province.
“The connection of model telecom through fiber optic cable system with Cambodia is a confirmation of important technical linking cooperation between two countries,” said Mr Khamhoung Sosamphanh, Deputy Director of ETL.
The cooperation is to be made within the framework of Global System for Mobile Communications Project of the Six Great Mekong Sub-Region Countries, which signed in 2004 and 2005, Kunming, China, aiming at linking telecommunication system and fast exchanges information in the Great Mekong Sub-Region.
The first phase project achieved and concluded in last March Vientiane. At moment the project is on second phase which commenced to install fiber optic cable between Laos and Cambodia.
Two governments have agreed to assign the ETL and TC to carry out the linking fiber optic cable along Laos and Cambodia border via the Nong Nonkhien international checkpoint.
The installation of fiber optic cable between Laos and Cambodia expects to be completed mid-this year.
Presently, a two-km long of cable will reach to Cambodian border and Cambodia side has installed cable to its border.
Signatories to the document, Mr Khamhoung Sosamphanh, Deputy Director of ETL, on behalf of Lao Government and Mr Lao Saleun, General Director of Telecommunications Company of Cambodia, witnessed by Champassak Party Secretary Soukhanh Maharath, Mr Khamloua Sitlakhone, Minister to Prime Minister’s Office and Head of National Post and Telecommunications Organisation and the Cambodian Minister of Post and Telecommunications and representatives from other organizations concerned.
