Phongsaly villagers cease slash and burn agriculture
(KPL)Two village groups in Phongsaly province, Ban Sophoun and Ban Namnga declared that since early 2008, it had ceased to use the slash and burn cultivation method.
The villagers replaced it with sedentary farming, they rear domestic animals and they run small businesses.
Ban Sophoun village group has nine villages. In it, there are 484 families and its population is 2,828 people. Two hundred and thirty five families carry out farming activities, 29 families are engaged in business and 381 families are permanent upland rice cultivation.
The Ban Namnga village group has 17 villages with the total number of 820 families and 4,810 population. In this village group, 357 families carry out farming and 376 families cultivate upland rice. Two hundred and seventy seven families are either in business or work as officials.
