Police to carry out road safety education campaign

(KPL) There were 2,187 road accidents in Vientiane Capital in 2008, resulting in 173 deaths and these figures were revealed during a meeting of the Traffic and Fire Department on 16 January.

Traffic Department’s Head of Propaganda Mr Sengthong Kueabounlam said that as many as 95 percent of road users violated traffic rules and such rampant and endemic abuse exacerbated the problem of attempting to effectively police the traffic code.

“Most road accident victims are young people, aged 16 to 30 years old and the majority or 54 percent of road accident incidents involved motorcyclists,” added Mr Sengthong.

The Police Chief of the Vientiane Police Headquarters, Colonel Bounthieng Chanthamoungkhon, who chaired this meeting said that the traffic police is in the process of carrying out a traffic safety education campaign to schools, companies, factories and average road users to raise awareness on traffic safety and the objective is to reduce road accidents.

The campaign is scheduled to end one month before the opening of the Sea Game in December 2009 and it is hoped that it would effectively reduce the number of accidents by 20 percent, said Mr Sengthong.
