Japan's department store sales decline in 2008 for 12th yr+

TOKYO, Jan. 19 Kyodo - Department store sales in Japan fell 4.3 percent in 2008 from the previous year to 7.38 trillion yen on a same-store basis, down for the 12th straight year and marking the third largest fall under the current data system introduced in
1965, an industry body said Monday.

The 2008 fall in sales was largely due to sluggish sales of clothing, a main
sales item in department stores, amid dismal consumption, according to the
Japan Department Stores Association.
Sales at department stores fell short of the 7.5 trillion yen recorded in 1987
and are expected to be lower than those of convenience stores in 2008, data for
which will be released Tuesday.
Department store sales of clothing decreased 6.2 percent in 2008 from the
previous year to 2.71 trillion yen on a 6.7 percent fall in sales of women's
wear to 1.76 trillion yen, the association said.
In December, department store sales dropped 9.4 percent from a year earlier to
794.77 billion yen, down for the 10th straight month and marking the largest
decline in year-end sales, it said.
An association official said, ''The severe situation since the latter half of
last year will continue this year.''
To cope with the situation, the official said the department store industry
must develop original women's clothing items and review the prices of expensive
goods.
As consumers became more reluctant to spend in the wake of the global financial
crisis around last fall, sales in the September-December period declined 7.1
percent from a year earlier, ''a situation worse than that right after the
collapse of the bubble economy,'' the official said.
By area, sales in Nagoya fell 7.8 percent in 2008 from the previous year to
431.98 billion yen on the back of slumping business at Toyota Motor Corp. based
in Aichi Prefecture.
Sales in Tokyo shrank 4.1 percent in 2008 to 1.83 trillion yen, while those in
December dropped 10.4 percent from a year earlier to 192.83 billion yen.
