Japan, UAE ink agreement on nuclear cooperation+

TOKYO, Jan. 19 Kyodo - Japan and the United Arab Emirates signed Monday an agreement to cooperate in civilian nuclear energy, the industry ministry said.

Under the deal, Japan will provide a range of assistance to the UAE, which is
aiming to operate its first nuclear power plant in 2017, the Ministry of
Economy, Trade and Industry said.
To lay the groundwork for the construction, Japan, which currently has 55
nuclear power plants, will likely first cooperate with the UAE in the areas of
human resources development and safety measures, officials at the ministry
said.
Harufumi Mochizuki, vice minister of economy, trade and industry, said the
agreement is ''a perfect example of a new type of cooperation between
oil-producing countries and Japan. It is very meaningful.''
Japan also has similar nuclear cooperation agreements with Vietnam and
Indonesia, according to the ministry.
