Siemens 1,000th Gas Turbine Arrives at Umm Al Houl Power Plant

Doha, September 26 (QNA) - Global technology firm Siemens celebrated the arrival of the companys 1,000th gas turbine at the Umm Al Houl Combined Cycle Power Plant. After journeying thousands of miles from the Siemens factory in Berlin, the fifth of the six 11m-long SGT5-4000F turbines has made it safely to the plant that will supply around a quarter of Qatars power generation capacity. One SGT5-4000F turbine has a capacity of 300MW, which translates into electricity for 1.8 million people. Commenting on the occasion, Siemens Qatar CEO Adrian Wood said that Qatar is witnessing rapid industrial, economic and population growth. With that comes greater demand for electricity and water supply. Siemens innovative gas turbine technology will help ensure that the Umm Al Houl power plant, an essential component of the countrys future power infrastructure, will operate reliably and efficiently for many years to come. He expressed delight to work with partners at Samsung and the Umm Al Houl consortium to make this ambitious project a reality and support sustainable long-term development in Qatar. For his part, chairman of Umm Al Houl Power Company and managing director and general manager of QEWC Fahad Al Mohannadi said that Umm Al Houl Plant will become one of the most important power plants that contribute to the future of electric power supply in the State of Qatar. In addition to the six turbines, Siemens scope of supply includes four steam turbines and 10 generators. The company has also signed a 25-year service agreement for the plants maintenance and servicing. Siemens has been contracted by Samsung C&T, which is building the entire complex together with its consortium partner - Hitachi Zosen. The end-customer is the project company, Umm Al Houl, a consortium comprising Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC), Qatar Foundation, Qatar Petroleum, Mitsubishi Corporation and Tokyo Electric Power Company. Umm Al Houl Combined Cycle Power Plant is part of Qatar's biggest power and water projects, located in the Qatar Economic Zone 3, south of the capital city of Doha. The power plant will be able to supply up to 2.52GW of electricity and 590,000m? (136 million gallons) of drinking water a day to 2.5 million homes in the area. The project is being implemented under Qatar National Vision 2030 and will help to increase electricity and water output by 22% and 25% over two phases. (QNA)
