Malaysians Liew Daren, Chun Seang Move Into Last Eight Of Taiwan Masters
KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14 (Bernama) -- Two Malaysian professional shuttlers - Liew Daren and Tan Chun Seang - moved into the quarterfinals of the Taiwan Masters Grand Prix Badminton Championship after beating their respective opponents in the third round of the tournament held at the Hsing Chuang Gymnasium in Taipei, on Thursday.
Liew beat Adulrach Namkul of Thailand 11-9, 9-11 11-9, 11-7 while Chun Seang edged Shih Kuei Chun from Taiwan 9-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-9 in the tournament that uses the 11 points scoring format, according to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) website www.bwfbadminton.org.
Two women's doubles pairs also made it to the last eight after defeating their respective opponents.
Chow Mei Kuan/Lee Meng Yean edged Japanese pair Nami Matsuyama/Shida Chiharu 11-4, 11-4, 12-10 while Lim Yin Loo/Yap Cheng Wen disposed Lin Xiao Min/Wu Fang Chien from Taiwan 11-8, 11-7, 11-9.
In the women's singles, Tee Jing Yi emerged as the only Malaysian player left standing after Ho Yen Mei fell to her opponent in the second round.
Jing Yi, the second seed scored a 11-9, 15-14, 11-3 win against Yeo Jia Min of Singapore while Yen Mei lost 7-11, 11-8, 6-11, 8-11 to Lee Chia Hsin of Taiwan.
Meanwhile, the country's challenge in the men's doubles fizzled out after the only pair left standing, Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub/Jagdish Singh suffered a shocking 5-11, 9-11, 3-11 loss to Singapore's unheralded pair Danny Bawa Chrisnanta/Hendra Wijaya in their second round match.
Malaysia did not send any representative in the mixed doubles event of the tournament which offers a total prize pursue of US$55,000 (RM231,704).
