Government of RK to carry on investing into space industry
Astana, 22 January 2009, Khabar - The continuation of the KazSat-2 project was the subject of a statement made by the Prime Minister Karim Massimov at an extended meeting of the National Space Agency. Kazakhstan’s second satellite is set to be designed and built using the most up-to-date foreign equipment. The National Space Agency chairman, Talgat Musabayev said this was the reason why the financing for the project should be enlarged.
Talgat Musabayev, chairman, Kazakhstan national space agency:
- In the future, we are planning to improve the KazSat-2 construction in order to avoid those mistakes we made in KazSat-1. We will have to substitute a lot of equipment made in Russia for some more quality items made in other foreign countries.
Kazakhstan’s first ever satellite which was launched in 2006 is now out of order as last year, KazSat-1 was completely lost. The Prime Minister asked for an investigation to be carried out into it. The money spent on the creation of the first satellite will be compensated, said Talgat Musabayev. The insurance coverage to be paid by the Russian side is expected to reach close to 65 million US dollars which is as much as Kazakhstan spent on the construction of KazSat-1. The Prime Minister reminded his team that it is the National Space Agency chairman who is personally responsible for the project.
Karim Massimov, Prime Minister of Kazakhstan:
- You are responsible for this project. You are a good astronaut. Now, you should turn into a good administrator.
The agency also has a plan to launch a space system of remote sensing and to build a test centre in Astana and the Baiterek Rocket Complex at the Baikonur launch pad, train new staff and form a scientific and technological basis. The prime minister added that despite the negative influence of the world financial crisis, the state is continuing to invest into the space industry.
