Representatives Council calls for protecting innocent civilians in Mosul

Manama, Oct. 22 (BNA): The Council of Representatives has called on the International Community to act quickly and urgently to protect children, women and the elderly from the terrorist acts and inhumane practices currently taking place in the Iraqi city of Mosul. The council warned against attempts to target defenceless innocent civilians, as well as their lives, liberties and property. In a statement issued today, the Representatives Council expressed deep concern over the recent developments and events taking place in Mosul, and expected the displacement of about 1.5 million persons as a result of the on-going fighting there. It called for allocating secure areas and corridors to allow defenceless civilians to flee the fighting and seek shelter, urging all refugee relief organisations to assume their humanitarian responsibilities and mobilise their efforts to provide accommodation, as well as basic services, such as water, food and first-aid, for potential refugees. While affirming its support to the efforts exerted to combat violence and terrorism in brotherly Iraq, and the initiatives aimed at reinforcing security and stability there, the Council of Representatives called for concerted regional and international efforts to ensure the safety of civilians, including children, women and the elderly, and make sure that war on terror is not used as a means to displace innocents and commit massacres against the Iraqi people, the statement also said.
