Malaysia Committed To UN As Promoting World Peace, Development
PUTRAJAYA (Malaysia), Oct 24 (Bernama) -- In conjunction with the United Nations Day celebrations on Malaysia, Malaysia is firmly committed to the United Nations as promoting cooperation in the maintenance of international peace and security, development and human rights.
The foreign ministry, in a statement issued on Monday in conjunction with the celebrations, said Malaysia continued to support and commit to efforts by the Security Council and the UN as a whole, in countering terrorism which currently posed a grave threat to international peace and security.
Malaysia was also committed to implementing the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) contained in the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development, which the UN member state leaders, including Malaysia, had adopted in September last year, it said.
"This is done by integrating the SDGs as part of the National Development Strategy under the 11th Malaysia Plan," said the ministry.
It said Malaysia, as a Non-Permanent Member of the United Nations Security Council for the term 2015-2016, was working closely with other council members in fulfilling its mandate of maintaining international peace and security, as stipulated in the UN Charter.
"While on the council, Malaysia has been promoting the peaceful resolution of conflicts through dialogue and utilising the approach of moderation," it added.
The ministry said Malaysia had continued to call for the Security Council to shoulder its responsibilities, in line with the UN Charter, towards finding a just and fair resolution to the question of Palestine, which had remained the longest-lasting conflict in UN history.
Malaysia, too, would continue to participate actively in UN peacekeeping missions, which was an international mechanism for the preservation of international peace and security, since participating in 1960, it said.
The United Nations Day is celebrated annually on Oct 24, to mark the anniversary of the entry into force of the Charter of the United Nations in 1945.
