Two districts face bank erosion

(KPL) Eight-kilometre stretches along the Mekong riverbank in Sikhottabong and Pakngum districts, Vientiane capital has been badly eroded.
Regarding to matter, Vientiane Deputy Mayor Bounchanh Sinthavong and his delegation last Wednesday visited the bank erosion areas in Vientiane Capital to survey and look for ways to solve this problem in order to prevent agricultural lands and houses of local people.
Head of Embankment Construction Project, Mr Somchith Sitthipong reported that there were many areas have been eroded with total of eight kilometres in Sikhottabong and Paknguem districts.
Presently, the construction of embankment is on mission in Phanmanh and Suanmone villages in Sisattanak district and Bo Oo area in Harsaifong district.
Mr Somchith said that bank erosion along Thin Phia village, Hadsaifong district is worse.
“The construction of embankment Thin Phia village will start next month and will complete before the upcoming rainy season,” he said.
He continued that there are many areas are likely at risk conditions of the bank erosion during the rainy season, especially in Hadsaifong district.
It is very dangerous because the Hadsaifong terrain covered by sand with mud, and some area is impacted by water under ground, he continued.
If we let the worse situation be, the villagers will lose considerable number of farmlands and many houses have to be moved the safe places, he said.
