Experts From Five Countries Discuss Martime Education

SEMARANG, C. Java, Nov 18 (Antara) - Experts from five countries participating in the First International Conference on Maritime Education and Training (ICMET) 2016 in Semarang, Central Java province, are discussing maritime education. ICMET 2016 was initiated by the Sailing Studies Polytechnic (PIP) Semarang here on Thursday, the Minister of Transportation, Budi Karya Sumadi, said. ICMET is a support for President Joko Widodo's program to make Indonesia the world maritime axis, according to the Director of PIP, Capt. Wisnu Handoko. "The experts are from Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Germany, and Indonesia, and they are delivering their papers," Wisnu said. Among others experts are Prof. Takeshi Nakazawa of the International Association of Maritime Universities Japan, Prof. Erika Techera from the University of Western Australia, and Prof. Erry Julian T. Adesta from the International Islamic University, Malaysia. Maritime education deliberately was raised as a topic at the conference because many people still do not understand that being a sailor is regulated under the international convention, Wisnu explained. The convention regulates education and curriculum as a formal produce to be competent sailors.
