Malaysian Currency Still Widely Accepted By Foreign Money Changers

By Massita Ahmad, Mohd Haikal Mohd Isa & Azeman Ariffin KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 22 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian ringgit is still widely accepted by money changers in overseas markets contrary to social media rumours saying otherwise. In neighbouring Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia, money changers report brisk transactions in the local currency with some reporting a lack of supply of the Ringgit due to heavy demand for it. And early Tuesday morning, Tabung Haji denied social media reports the Ringgit was not accepted in Makkah and Madinah. The Pilgrims Fund Board said a check with its office in Jeddah showed that the Ringgit was accepted by most money changers. On the forex market Tuesday, the ringgit was at 4.43 to the US dollar as at 4 pm compared with 4.417 at Monday's closing. In Singapore, money changers dismissed speculation that they had run out of supply of the Ringgit, saying that there was adequate supply of the Malaysian currency. In Thailand, the Ringgit was still widely accepted by the country's money changers. Several money changers in Bangkok said there was no problem exchanging the Ringgit with other currencies. Supply was ample, they said. In Indonesia, the Ringgit remained actively traded albeit at a weaker exchange rate of RM3.20 for 10,000 rupiah. Several money changers in Jakarta were still actively buying and selling the Ringgit. -- BERNAMA
