World Renewable Energy Congress opens

Manama, Dec. 5 (BNA): Electricity and Water Affairs Minister Dr. Abdulhussain Mirza patronised the opening of the 17th World Renewable Energy Congress at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. More than 350 senior officials and specialists from within and outside Bahrain are attending the event, organised by the World Energy Council in collaboration with the University of Bahrain. Dr. Mirza delivered the keynote speech at the opening ceremony and spoke about the setting up of the Sustainable Energy Unit and its plans and objectives. He also explained the National Plan for Energy Efficiency to encourage investment in renewable energy. The minister also spoke about the importance of renewable energy in the light of falling oil prices and their effect on oil-producing countries. He said the last 30 years have seen high rates of energy consumption in the GCC as compared with rates of global consumption. The minister thanked the University of Bahrain and the World Energy Council for their efforts in organising the conference and making it a success. University President Dr. Riad Youssef Hamza and World Council for Renewable Energy Dr. Ali Al Sayegh, were present at the opening. The conference is held every two years and is attended by experts and international specialists in renewable and green energy. It aims to develop sustainable development in terms of sustainable energy production and energy conservation and raise efficiency of use in appliances and buildings. It is also an opportunity for investors, specialists and those interested in discussions with international experts about investment opportunities in Bahrain and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
