Bahrain participates in UNSC open debate

New York Dec. 21 (BNA): Tasked by his Royal Highness Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa the Prime Minister, the Minister of Labour and Social Development, Jameel Humaidan, has headed the Kingdom of Bahrain's delegation to the Open Debate held by the UN Security Council (UNSC) in New York, at the ministerial level, chaired by Mariano Rajoy Spanish Prime Minister and President of the Security Council for the current session, to tackle the issue of "human trafficking in conflict zones." The minister said that the leadership of the Kingdom of Bahrain joins the international community in all efforts to address the human suffering caused by territorial disputes and increasing violence in communities, and supports the initiative of the United Nations to announce and coordinate a unified internationalist position and to incriminate human trafficking. He called on States to consider ratifying or acceding to the United Nations Convention against transnational organized crime and its Protocol to prevent and combat trafficking in persons, especially women and children, and for States to take decisive action to prevent and criminalize trafficking in persons and to investigate and prosecute and to sue persons implicated in human trafficking in accordance with national legislation. Also, the Kingdom's permanent representative to the United Nations Ambassador Jamal Al-Rowai'e participated in the discussion session which addressed the relationship between human trafficking and armed conflict situations, sexual abuse, child soldiers recruitment, impact of wars in women and children enslavement which are considered stark challenges to international law and humanitarian values which necessitate taking appropriate measures to deter such inhumane and unethical abuse and to create change in the methods of combating human trafficking.
