Glory wary of A-League marquee flops
Perth Glory coach Dave Mitchell says he has learned from Sydney FC's mistakes and will bide his time in search of a marquee player for the 2009-10 A-League season.
The Glory, cashed up following Nikita Rukavytsya's six-figure transfer to Dutch
first-division side FC Twente, have already begun the search for a marquee man.
Sydney FC struck gold in 2005-06 by signing Dwight Yorke as their star import but
since then has not had the same luck despite splashing plenty of cash on marquee
players.
Former Brazilian international Juninho was plagued by injuries during his time at
the club while Socceroo John Aloisi was a massive flop this season as Sydney
finished outside of the top four.
Mitchell said he would not rush out to sign up a marquee player, even suggesting he
may wait until part way through next season before getting someone in - if anyone at
all.
"The good thing is the club would like to get a marquee player," Mitchell said.
"But that is also fraught with danger as well because as Sydney have proven ...
they've had a couple of high profile players and for whatever reason they haven't
sort of performed to their expectation, either it be (because of) injury or form or
the team's not playing well.
"They had a great player (Yorke) in the first year, he did well for them but after
that, it hasn't done them much good and they've spent a lot of money.
"So if we are to bring a marquee player in or such, we're going to make sure that
he's fit and able and a very good player.
"I think it's important we don't rush into things.
"There are people we've targeted and we're moving on with that but again, you don't
close off, you have an open mind and you look at who's going to be available."
Mitchell said the club was in the process of securing Dutch international Victor
Sikora on a one or two-year deal but Adrian Trinidad has returned to Argentina after
enduring a frustrating season.
Brazilian Amaral, who underwent season-ending surgery on his hamstring in early
December, is facing an uphill battle to remain with the club.
Mitchell said he wanted to see the 35-year-old under match conditions again before
making a decision on his future.
"At the end of the day you've got to see him playing a game and that's what I more
or less want to see, that he gets to a fit standard and plays again," Mitchell said.
Former Portsmouth, West Ham and Leeds defender Hayden Foxe is likely to be let go
after playing just eight games in two injury-hit seasons, while David Tarka's future
remains up in the air after another season blighted by injury.
