217 illegal taxi drivers arrested in 2016

Manama, Jan. 17 (BNA): The General Directorate of Traffic today announced the arrest of 217 illegal taxi drivers of various nationalities in 2016. They were all referred to the Public Prosecutor and the they were sentenced to jail and fined BD1,000. The non-Bahrainis among them were deported. The department will continue to monitor such violations that put the livelihood of registered Bahraini taxi drivers at risk. It would also continue to organise campaigns to act against violators in cooperation with security directorates and the authorities concerned. (MOI)
