SDF peacekeeping mission in Golan Heights extended through Sept.+

TOKYO, Jan. 30 Kyodo - Japan decided Friday to extend a Self-Defense Force mission participating in U.N. peacekeeping operations in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights in southern Syria for another six months until Sept. 30, 2009.

The decision, made during a Cabinet meeting, came in response to a U.N.
Security Council decision in December to extend the mission of the U.N.
Disengagement Observer Force in the Golan Heights, Japanese officials said.
The SDF's current deployment period will end at the end of March.
Forty-five Japanese, mainly with the Ground Self-Defense Force, are taking part
in transportation and other logistical duties in UNDOF, which has been working
to maintain a cease-fire between Syria and Israel since 1974.
Starting April 1, one SDF officer will be added to the Japanese delegation,
bringing the number of SDF officers taking part in the UNDOF mission to 46. The
officer will be posted at UNDOF's headquarters to take charge of transportation
work.
