Opportunity-seekers brave cold weather for pleasant alternatives

Manama, Feb. 3 (BNA): High winds and low temperatures failed to dampen the enthusiasm of citizens and expatriates in Bahrain who braved the natural elements and flocked to Suq Al Magasis, the week-end open-air flea market.
Temperatures fell dramatically in Bahrain, reaching 7 degrees in early morning while the meteorological office warned of strong winds throughout Friday.
Traditionally held on Friday and Saturday in Isa Town, the market features stands that sell second-hand items, used books, vintage clothes, Bric-a-brac, live pets and several others products.
Fortunately for the crowds, the vibrant market is free of hustle and haggle and people, from shoppers to onlookers, are able to move between the stands easily.
Although the numbers of people on Friday were lower than usual, several stand owners said they were pleased with the turnout.
“It is a good day for business even though I sincerely expected a big drop compared with last week,” Ali said from behind his stand selling small home items. “The market has become an unavoidable part of people’s Friday routines and whatever the weather conditions, they do not want to miss the opportunities they are sure to find here.”
He interrupts the conversation to deal with a middle-aged man accompanied by two young boys. They were all wearing heavy clothes.
“We the salesmen and the shoppers have learned to deal with the weather challenges, and we come here well prepared for the high winds and the cold weather. Then, we carry on with our business as usual until sunset.”
A man selling paintings and wrapped up in a thick coat, woollen scarf and heavy gloves was looking perplexed at a group of expatriates who were sporting light clothes, oblivious to the cold weather.
“I know that most people are hardier than I am since I am an old man now,” he said. “But, I was wondering how these foreigners could stand the freezing temperatures. I was astonished by their attitudes to clothes, but happy they bought a couple of old paintings from me.”
A woman selling used clothes opted to sit down deeply ensconced in an old armchair under several layers of winter blankets.
“It is too cold for me to stand up, but I am conducting my business from this makeshift office,” she said in a small voice, breaking into a smile as she gestured to her armchair.
“Doing business here is great because everybody is compliant and helpful. It is a pleasant atmosphere, maybe because there are ample opportunities for all and the prices are really low. People do not feel the financial weight of the supermarkets and are at ease. That is one of the best features of Suq Al Magsis.”
