Commemorative coins are minted to honor late King Bhumibol

BANGKOK, Feb 24 (TNA) -- Two new commemorative coins are minted to honor Thailand’s late King Bhumibol Adulyadej for his last two special occasions under the 70-year reign. Director General of the Treasury Department Chakkrit Parapuntakul revealed Thursday that the coins both in 20-baht denomination would be available next month. The first marks the 100th anniversary of Thai cooperatives and the second is to commemorate Thailand’s entry into the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). Mr Chakkrit said the commemorative coins would be made available in sets of five; two of each new coins and one of those marking the 50th anniversary of the Royal Rain-making Project. The Treasury Department will distribute the coins to all of its outlets across the country, allowing one person to buy only on set. After the death of the King on October 13, 2016, demands for commemorative coins for all occasions have run high. Enthusiastic crowds showed up at the Treasury Department when series of coins are made available, especially the one marking His Majesty the King’s 70th anniversary of accession to the throne. (TNA)
