Mt. Asama erupts, agency warns of ash deposits+

TOKYO, Feb. 2 Kyodo -
Mt. Asama, straddling Gunma and Nagano prefectures, had a minor eruption early
Monday from its summit crater, sending ash showers as far as Tokyo and its
vicinity in the southern Kanto region, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
The agency warned of the possibility of large ash deposits that could be
scattered within a radius of about 4 kilometers from the 2,568-meter volcano's
crater due to the minor eruption, which occurred at 1:51 a.m.
After the eruption, smoke billowed from the crater reaching heights of up to
about 2,000 meters shortly after 2 a.m. but shrank to around 100 meters high
after daybreak, the agency said.
The smoke was moving southeastward, and ash showers were observed in Tokyo,
Saitama, Kanagawa and Chiba prefectures in addition to Karuizawa in Nagano
Prefecture and Tomioka in Gunma Prefecture, it said.
The agency said it sees the situation as subsiding as the frequency of volcanic
earthquakes, believed to be focused below the crater, has decreased following
the eruption.
It is Mt. Asama's first eruption since a minor one last August. The volcano
erupted on a medium scale in September and November 2004, causing damage to
local crops.
On Sunday, the agency had raised the volcanic eruption alert level for Mt.
Asama from 2 to 3 on the 5-stage warning scale. Level 3 prohibits people from
being on Mt. Asama. Level 2 restricts them from approaching the crater area.
A maximum of about 2 millimeters of ash fell in the town of Karuizawa, but the
Nagano prefectural government said it has not received any reports of damage.
Meanwhile, the Fukuoka District Meteorological Observatory raised the eruption
alert level for Sakurajima in Kagoshima from 2 to 3 on Monday after several
minor explosive eruptions were observed from Sunday morning to Monday at one of
its craters.
The tiny eruptions caused ash deposits to scatter as far as the volcano's fifth
station, located between 500 and 800 meters from the crater, according to the
observatory.
The observatory warned of a possible increase in Sakurajima's volcanic
activities as well as the possibility that large ash deposits or pyroclastic
flow could reach areas of about 2 km in radius from the crater.
