Work starts to improve relic site of late president

Hai Phong (VNA) - Work on the improvement of the relic site of late president Ton
Duc Thang in Hai Phong City 's Tien Lang district officially began on Feb.
3.

The upgrading will restore the house in the relic site to its original two-storey
design at a cost of 7 billion VND, to be funded by donations of the Hai Phong
Electricity Company staff and several local businesses.

President Ton Duc Thang (1888-1980), also known as Uncle Ton, took office from
1969 to 1980 and led the nation through hard times of war and national
reconstruction.

The original two-storey house at the relic site was built in 1957 as a gift of
Uncle Ton for the Nam Bo Farm in Tien Lang district. The president gave all the
money he received along with the "For the World Peace" Award from the Soviet
Union to the construction of the building, which served as working offices for
the farm's management.

During the war, the house was destroyed by American bombs. It was rebuilt into a
single-storey after the national reunification.

In 2005, the municipal People's Committee recognised the house as a historical
relic where many valuable documents and images on the life of the late president
are stored and displayed.-Enditem
