Vietnam pushes for peace process in Sudan
New York (VNA) - A Vietnamese diplomat has called upon all the parties concerned
to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from any action that may put civilian
lives at risk and jeopardise the political process in South Darfur of Sudan .
The Representative of Vietnam to the UN Security Council, Ambassador Le Luong Minh,
made the request at an UNSC consultation in New York on Feb. 3 to discuss the
escalating tension in Muhajeria, South Darfur .
"We urge all the parties to fully abide by international humanitarian and human
rights laws and accord the utmost priority to the safety of civilians as well as UN
staff and humanitarian workers operating in Darfur ," he said.
Whilst expressing his concern over possible implications of the military activities
on the safety and livelihood of the local population, Minh asked the Justice and
Equality Movement (JEM), a rebel group fighting against the legitimate government of
Sudan , to stop its provocation and return to the political process in order to
seek for a durable solution to the conflict.
The ambassador also affirmed Vietnam 's support for the important role played by
the UN, UN-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), international organisations and
regional countries in helping to deescalate the current tension and bring in a
lasting and comprehensive solution to the Darfur conflict.-Enditem
