Malaysia's Bernama Holds Jubilee Celebrations With Appreciation Dinner, Special Stamps

KUALA LUMPUR, May 9 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) will celebrate its 50th anniversary with an appreciation dinner and various programmes to show its appreciation to its staff and clients. Bernama General Manager Zulkefli Salleh (right) said the dinner which will be held at Dewan Perdana Felda on May 22 will also be attended by Deputy Prime Minister Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He said at the dinner event, awards will be presented to those who have contributed to Bernama’s growth. “This is an appreciation event for former and current Bernama staff, loyal clients as well as readers, listeners and viewers of news and information products from Bernama,” he said at a press conference on the anniversary celebrations held here Monday. Guest artistes who are set to perform at the event are Khatijah Ibrahim and the buskers group, Suara. Other events which have been and will be held in conjunction with the jubilee celebrations are a poetry writing and recital competition, bowling challenge, prayer session and an all-ladies treasure hunt. The Bernama news service has also produced several articles and exclusive interviews on Bernama. Bernama was set up under the Parliament Act on April 6, 1967 and officially launched on Aug 30, 1967 in conjunction with the 10th year of independence. It began operations on May 20, 1968 with the first news on Bernama service by then-Information and Broadcasting Minister, Senu Abdul Rahman. At the press conference, Bernama also announced the launch of its special corporate stamp, with 10,000 to be printed, and available at 60 sen each at Wisma Bernama. Meanwhile, Bernama Chairman Azman Ujang said in a statement that during its 50 years, Bernama had played an important role as a disseminator of information, news, photographs, audio and visuals which were accurate and true. He said he hoped Bernama would continue to be relevant even in a landscape of news with many changes, with the social media and news portals which had created false news. (photoBERNAMA) -- BERNAMA
