Singapore To Use 'SGP' Code In SEA Games, APG

KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 (Bernama) -- Singapore will be using its new abbreviation for country code, and be known as ‘SGP’ instead of “SIN”, in the upcoming SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games (APG), here. This was confirmed by Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) Secretary General, Low Beng Choo. “Yes, Singapore will use SGP. They applied to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) (for use of the new code) and IOC has approved it,” she told Bernama. The new code was first used during the Sapporo 2017 Asian Winter Games in February this year, following approval from IOC in September 2016. The Republic was using SIN abbreviation since 1959, including in the 2016 Rio Olympics in August, last year. Malaysia had previously used the ‘MAL’ code from 1964–1988, before changing it to ‘MAS’. The 29th SEA Games will be held from Aug 19-30 in Kuala Lumpur, while the APG is scheduled from Sept 17-23. -- BERNAMA
