Malaysia's UPM Scientists Produce Steroid-Free Cream to Treat Eczema

SERDANG (Selangor), June 8 (Bernama) – Good news for those who are suffering from eczema, as a group of scientists from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) has produced a steroid-free ultra moisturising natural cream to treat the problem.
The cream, REMDII Sensitive, was generated through research efforts undertaken by the university’s five scientists and biomedical experts since 2013.
Project head, Prof Dr Lai Oi Ming, 48, (pix) said the idea to produce the cream came after her four-year-old son, who had eczema since birth, had to use cream that contained synthetic ingredients and steroids.
“Most doctors prescribed medications that caused my son’s skin to become itchy. That's how a group of scientists got together to produce a cream that not only has moisturising effect, but it can also improves the skin of people with eczema,” she told reporters after the introduction of REMDII Sensitive, here, Wednesday.
Dr Lai said the cream was produced using bioactive substances, comprising full spectrum Vitamin E from palm oil extract, and contained anti-inflammatory properties that could penetrate the skin to stimulate recovery.
“Oil moisturising extracts of red palm oil is rich in substances such as tocopherols, tocotrienols and carotenoids, which are the main ingredients of REMDII Sensitive formulations,” said Dr Lai, who is also a researcher at the Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences Faculty, UPM.
She said eczema, a disease that affected individuals of all ages, especially children, was caused by inflammation, dryness and redness of the skin and pus from old wounds, and until now there was no effective cure for the problem.
The clinical data gathered from the study of patients using REMDII Sensitive cream gave indication that it had managed to reduce itching and flaking and able to treat a skin condition in just two weeks, she said.
The product received approval from the Ministry of Health and had received several accolades, including the USA-INPEX Award of Excellent (Special Award) and a gold medal in the International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX) 2017.
