Thailand exports eggs to bird flu hit South Korea

BANGKOK, June 25 (TNA) – The Thai authorities expect Thailand will monthly export more than 30 million fresh chicken eggs to South Korea in 2017 after an avian flu outbreak hit the Asia’s fourth-largest economy late last year. Following a bird flu outbreak in November 2016, the South Korean authorities culled tens of millions of poultry in a bid to contain the virus. The massive culling, however, led to a shortage of eggs across the country, forcing it to import eggs from overseas. Gen Chatchai Sarikulya, minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, said the South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety for the first time approved the import of chicken eggs from two Thai companies as their products had passed its safety standards. The two egg exporters are Kasemchai Farm Group and Saeng Thong Farm. He said this represents a historic step towards exporting fresh chicken eggs to South Korea. Gen Chatchai added that 975,240 eggs have so far been shipped to Seoul, and are expected to arrive this week. The Ministry expects the exports monthly average 32.5 million eggs this year, and that it will help to stabilize the egg price in Thailand. (TNA)
