Three policemen killed in Pattani bombing
PATTANI, Feb 12 (TNA) - The deputy superintendent of Nong Jik district police station and two other police officers were killed and another police officer seriously injured on Thursday in a bombing believed to be the work of insurgents in this southern border province, according to police.

The bomb was detonated as a police patrol vehicle carrying Police Colonel Yutthakarn Plianbhodi, deputy superintendent of Nong Jik police station, and an undisclosed number of police personnel returned from escorting teachers to school in Pattani's Nong Jik district.

The powerful blast critically wounded four policemen at the scene, of whom three officers succumbed to their wounds. Col. Yutthakarn and two other officers -- Pol.Sen.Sgt-Maj Vessapol Thammee and Pol. Sgt. Vinai Hemman--were pronounced dead at hospital.

The critically injured police officer was identified as Pol. L/C Achanai Abdullateh. He remains in hospital.

Police are searching for the perpetrators of the attack,and forensic experts are collecting evidence at the crime scene.

The deadly attack is the latest violence in the insurgency-torn southern border provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat where continuing violence has killed more than 3,500 people since early 2004. (TNA)
