IIUM Debate Team Champs Of IADCO 2017

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) debate team once again emerged as the winners in the International Arabic Debate Championship Open 2017 (IADCO 2017), under the universities category, at IIUM’s main campus here Sunday night. The team, on the proposition side of the final debate entitled 'This hall believes that the migration of scholars from third world countries affects development projects', won against the opposition team, Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII). The team made up of Nur Fadhilah Waji, Mohammad Ikmal Hakimi Mohammad Helni and Mohammad Nazri Rostam, recently also emerged as the runner-up in the International Universities Arabic Debate Championship 2017 that was held in Doha, Qatar, and received a cash prize of US$700 (RM3,000) and gifts. The championship, held from Aug 4 to 7, saw participation from 19 Malay language debate teams, English debate teams (22) and Arabic debate teams (22) for the school category. Meanwhile, for the university category, 14 teams comprising local and foreign universities such as from Indonesia, Singapore and Jordan competed. Mohamad Ikmal Hakimi, when met by Bernama after the event expressed his feelings of joy and excitement over the two awards received in IADCO 2017. “Debating is a good platform to produce intellectuals who are aware of current issues, capable of critical and creative thinking, as well as being able to express ideas effectively,” said UIAM's Deputy Rector (Student Affairs) Prof Dr Mizan Hitam in his speech. -- BERNAMA
