ASEAN Committee In Chile Celebrates 50th Anniversary Of ASEAN

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 9 (Bernama) -- The ASEAN Committee in Santiago (ACS) under the chairmanship of Malaysian ambassador Dr Mohamad Rameez Yahaya organised the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN celebration at the grounds of the Malaysian embassy in Santiago, Tuesday. The event saw the attendance of, among others, Chilean Acting Foreign Minister Edgardo Riveros Marin, Deputy Minister of Commerce Paulina Nazal, Mayor of Graneros Don Claudio Segovia, Angela Jeria who is the mother of Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, ambassadors, businessmen and senators. The event was hosted by five ambassadors from ASEAN countries where Mohamed Rameez in his welcoming speech, described the importance of ASEAN to Chile and congratulated Chile for acceding to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia. The event featured traditional dance from Thailand and Indonesia, and kompang (Malay traditional musical instrument) and silat (indigenous martial arts from a geo-cultural area of Southeast Asia) performances from Malaysia before the flag-hoisting ceremony by the five ambassadors from the ASEAN nations. The guests also got to savour the spread of delicacies from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines at the event which was also marked with the anniversary cake-cutting ceremony. -- BERNAMA
