KL2017: Malaysia's Medal Hopes In Women's Football Dim

SHAH ALAM (Selangor, Malaysia), Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Malaysia’s hopes of winning a medal in the women’s football competition of the 2017 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games dimmed after the national team were mauled 5-0 by Myanmar in the preliminary at Stadium UiTM Shah Alam here Thursday night. The second successive defeat saw Malaysia at the bottom of the table of the five teams in the running. Myanmar, the bronze medallists in the 2013 SEA Games, kept the Malaysian defence marshalled by Malini Nordin and Usliza Usman busy in the first half but Malaysia also had their fair share of attacks. However, the floodgates opened in the second half with Myanmar’s first goal in the 47th minute gifted by substitute Nor Athirah Mamat who deflected the ball into the Malaysian net while trying to make a clearance from a Myanmar attack. Win Theingi Tun scored Myanmar’s second in the 63rd minute followed by Khin Moe Wai (72nd), Theingi Tun again in the 76th before Moe Wai also earned a brace with their fifth three minutes later. Earlier , Vietnam had defeated the Philippines 3-0 in their opening match at Stadium UM Arena. -- BERNAMA
