UN Urged to Issue Resolution to Safeguard Human Rights of Rohingya
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20 (Bernama) – The United Nations is called upon to use all its instruments towards issuing a resolution to ensure human rights protection and safety for the ethnic Rohingya minority in Myanmar.
ASEAN Rohingya Centre (ARC) executive director, Dr Helmi Ibrahim, in a statement, said the ongoing UN General Assembly would be the most appropriate time to seek a solution to the worsening Rohingya crisis.
"The Rohingya crisis is the biggest test for UN’s integrity as a world body. Its failure to find a solution to the crisis would be an antithesis to the UN Charter itself,” he said.
Helmi said the ARC hoped that a firm decision could be reached at the UN General Assembly this time and that it would condemn the atrocities committed by the Myanmar regime against the Muslim Rohingya, as well as acknowledge that genocide against the ethnic minority in Myanmar’s Rakhine State was happening.
“Whatever the outcome of the UN General Assembly without referring to the matter (Rohingya crisis) can be regarded as a failure,” he added.
The 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly in New York is from Sept 18 to 26.
