2 Japanese films awarded Oscars+

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 22 Kyodo - Two Japanese films won Oscars at the 81st Annual Academy Awards ceremony Sunday, with ''Okuribito'' (Departures) chosen as the best foreign language film and ''Tsumiki no Ie'' (The House of Small Cubes) as the best animated
short film.

Directed by Yojiro Takita, ''Okuribito'' depicts dignity in death through the
eyes of its protagonist, who makes his living placing bodies into coffins in
Yamagata Prefecture.
Popular actors Masahiro Motoki and Tsutomu Yamazaki as well as actress Ryoko
Hirosue acted in the film. Since its release last September, its box-office
revenues have exceeded 3 billion yen in Japan.
The 12-minute film ''Tsumiki no Ie,'' which portrays the life of an old man who
tries to keep rising water caused by global warming out of his house, is
directed by Kunio Kato.
Takita, 53, started his career by making adult films, and his 2002 sword action
film ''Mibu Gishi Den'' (When the Last Sword is Drawn) was chosen as the best
picture of the Japan Academy Prizes.
At the Oscars ceremony, Takita told the audience in English, ''Thank you to
everybody who helped me with this film. I'm very, very happy. This is a new
departure for me and we will be back, I hope.''
It was the fourth Japanese film to win the best foreign language category. The
last time a Japanese film received the award was 1956 when Hiroshi Inagaki's
''Miyamoto Musashi'' was chosen.
Kato, the 31-year-old director of ''Tsumiki no Ie,'' started creating animation
films while he was a student at Tama Art University in Tokyo and has released
several works via the Internet and TV.
Kato said in a statement, ''I am happy that I could receive such a grand award.''
A heartfelt underdog tale of a street kid ''Slumdog Millionaire,'' directed by
British director Danny Boyle, snatched best motion picture and achievement in
directing awards this year.
The Oscar for best leading actor went to Sean Penn for his performance of the
first openly gay man to be voted into public office in the United States in
''Milk,'' while that for best leading actress went to Kate Winslet in ''The
Reader'' for her portrayal of a woman who has an affair with a teenage boy.
Oscar winners are selected annually through voting by about 5,800 members of
the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization that hosts
the awards.
