Ancient kiln discovered first time in Thai South

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, Dec 27 (TNA) – A local resident discovered an intact ancient ceramic kiln behind his house while cultivating the land for farming. Arnat Bamrungwong, director of the 14th fine arts office in Nakhon Si Thammarat said that archaeologists had already inspected the site in Phra Phrom district. They initially presumed that the small ancient kiln, unearthed for the first time in the South is used for producing high-level minor art of earthenware. This kind of kiln is widely used to produce ceramics in the Sukhothai period, dating back to 500-600 years ago. This one is similar to an ancient kiln, discovered near the Noi River in Singburi. However, he said no pottery was left at the kiln. It is possible that all were intact and removed before the kiln was abandoned. Experts will excavate and thoroughly examine the kiln site for further study. The land owner, Suraphon Sa-nguansaeng said he prepared the soil for growing vegetables behind his house and found the kiln, about two metres long. The discovery attracted the crowd to his house as this ancient kiln has never been found in the community before. (TNA)
